Old-style glamour — especially in black and white — ruled the night air as stars of Hollywood and the fashion world converged on the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday evening for the annual Costume Institute gala, the biggest event on the New York fashion calendar.
This year, the glamour quotient was raised a notch: Whereas last year’s theme was punk, this time women were focusing on flowing gowns, and men were asked to dress in white tie — full evening dress, including tails, in other words. A few men brought along their top hats.

Though I live just across town, alas, I must have missed my a-lister invite to the 2014 Met Gala (chuckle**chuckle)…but that didn’t stop me from finding my top 4 fave looks of the evening. Total bonus – my beauty friends ( Renato Campora for Matrix, Christopher Naselli for Alterna Haircare, Vera Steimberg for L’Oréal Paris and Mara Roszak for L’Oréal Paris) let us in on the secrets to creating these red carpet looks of the evening from home.
You’re welcome!
REESE WITHERSPOON: HAIRSTYLIST- Renato Campora for Matrix
INSPIRATION: To compliment Reese’s strapless dress, Renato created an old-fashioned faux bob to accentuate her sharp cheekbones. Reese wanted to keep the hairdo simple, yet elegant. Reese did not want much hair falling on her face, which is why we kept it all in one place to not draw attention from her stunning dress.
STEP-BY-STEP:
STEP 1: Apply a dime-size amount of Total Results Heat Resist Blow Out Tamer ($16) throughout damp hair to give it shape and body and to add a silky protective layer to hair before blow-drying.
STEP 2: Spray Biolage VOLUMEBLOOM Full-Lift Volumizer Spray ($16) to ends to add bounce, long-lasting volume, and manageability.
STEP 3: Blow dry hair with a round brush to create volume from root to tip.
STEP 4: Flat iron sections around the face and throughout the shaft to refine and smooth the look.
STEP 5: Run a small amount of Biolage SMOOTHPROOF Serum ($16) throughout the hair to remove frizz and fly-aways.
STEP 6: Use a 1 ½ -inch barrel and curl the ends inward, brushing them out afterwards.
STEP 7: Finish by spritzing Biolage Styling Complete Control Hairspray ($16) all over to secure the bob.

KATIE HOLMES: HAIRSTYLIST- Christopher Naselli for Alterna Haircare
INSPIRATION: Chris wanted Katie’s hair to compliment her Marchesa mustard-color dress. Since the dress is quite voluminous, Chris felt that it was important to show off Katie’s shoulders and décolletage with a shorter style. Katie really wanted to do a bob, so we want for a Beyonce faux bob look; asymmetrical, super-textured, and piecey. Victorian class meets rock-and-roll.
STEP-BY-STEP:
STEP 1: Shampoo and condition hair with Alterna Caviar Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner ($32 each).
STEP 2: Towel dry hair, and apply Alterna Bamboo Volume 2-in-1 Volumizer ($25) to damp strands, scrunching it in from root to end to add textured volume and lift.
STEP 3: Slowly dry hair using a diffuser.
STEP 4: Separate hair starting at the bottom of the earlobe on both ends, and twist this bottom section into a cornrow which acts as a base for the bob. Secure with bobby pins.
STEP 5: Remove random hair sections and spray them with Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Breakage Thermal Protectant Spray ($25).
STEP 6: Wrap each loose section around a 1 inch curling iron for less than 5 seconds. Run fingers through curled pieces.
STEP 7: Part hair in the center, leaving the front sections of the hair (from the ear forward) out. Take 3 large sections in the back of the hair and pin them into the cornrow to create a faux bob.
STEP 8: Finish with Alterna Caviar Perfect Texture Finishing Spray ($28) throughout the whole head to add light hold and texture.

ZOE SALDANA: MAKEUP ARTIST –Vera Steimberg for L’Oréal Paris
INSPIRATION: Zoe wore a stunning black and white Michael Kors gown, which made Vera think of Marbella, Spain. Vera and Zoe toyed around with a few different looks, but ultimately decided on a Spanish-inspired style with a romantic, smoky eye. Earth tones were balanced by a light lip color to create a fun, fresh and unique look for Zoe.
STEP-BY-STEP:
STEP 1: Start by mixing L’Oreal Paris True Match Super Blendable Makeup in Crème Café (W8) and Nut Brown (C7) ($10.95), applying lightly only on areas that require coverage.
STEP 2: Next, begin on eyes, starting with liner. Use L’Oreal Paris Silkisimme Black Eyeliner ($8.99) inside rims and apply a thin layer of liquid liner onto lids, extending outwards to create a slight cat-eye.
STEP 3: Apply several coats of L’Oreal Paris Butterfly Mascara ($8.99) to make eyes pop.
STEP 4: Next, apply shadows in various earthy tones of brown and bronze to give the lids a lightly smoky look.
STEP 5: To add a touch of cheek color, apply L’Oreal Paris True Match Naturale Blush in Soft Rose ($10.95).
STEP 6: Lightly apply L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Extraordinaire in Ruby Opera ($8.99) to lips, using the fingers for a subtle touch of lip color to balance a dramatic eye.

STEP 2: Spray L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray ($4.99) liberally all over the mid-length and ends, and rough-dried hair away from the face to build texture and volume, while still maintaining structure.
STEP 3: Once hair is dry, gently tease the crown for more height and backcomb throughout to build a solid foundation.
STEP 4: Start creating the wide, woven style from the left side, moving over to the right, making a side braid. Secure the end with a clear elastic, and allow pieces to fall out loosely around the face.
